INTRODUCTION
Your reading of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye has profoundly
affected you. You wish you could do something to help. How wonderful that now
you can! Bronx Leadership
Academy seniors, today's youth
and tomorrow's future, have been specially selected to participate in a study
on the effect of policy implications on America's
beauty culture.
This study is called PROJECT The Bluest Eye.
The framers of this study wanted to address the real-world implications of
the beauty culture issues Morrison raises. The social problem whose
implications you will be asked to explore is the following: Too many people feel pressured to alter their
appearance in order to achieve social and financial success in America.
As members of PROJECT The Bluest Eye,
your group will research harms associated with media promotion of a beauty
culture that regards a certain type of beauty as normative, and in some
cases, as required (e.g. for the performance of certain jobs, particularly
those that involve a high level of contact with the public).
The framers of PROJECT The Bluest Eye
feel that Bronx high school seniors are in a unique
position with regard to this issue:
1. you, as teenagers, are part of the fastest-growing consumer group in
the United States
and are also intelligent consumers of popular culture-of a variety of media
products.
2. you have experienced the American public school system first-hand, and
thus, are well-positioned to evaluated what works and what doesn't.
3. you are about to enter, and are researching, the realms of higher
education.
Thus, you should be able to bring a tremendous feeling for, and a nuanced
understanding of the issues to the task at hand.
Congratulations on your selection for this important work!
