Introduction:

Social issues concern all Americans. Throughout this course we have discussed issues that concern you as young adults. We have also examined court cases that affect individual rights. As you know, decisions of the Supreme Court become law.

 

Task:

You will write an essay examining how social policy issues are reflected in Supreme Court cases.

Some social issues you might deal with are: abortion, human rights, animal rights, gun control, or drugs. You are not limited to these suggestions.

  • Students will search for an article dealing with social policies set by the government and concern US Constitutional Amendments
  • Students will search for a Supreme Court case that supports or deals with the issue in the article

 

Process:

Social Policy Article

*      Find an article that deals with a social policy issue with an internet search engine

ü      Summarize the main point of the article

ü      Describe the importance of this social issue

ü      List Civil Liberties it deals with

ü      Include opinion and possible solutions

 

 

Supreme Court Case

*      Find a court case that deals with your social issue

ü      Summarize the case

§         Defendant

§         Prosecution or plaintiff

§         Decision

ü      Relate the Case to their article either in support or against

ü      Include your opinion

Evaluation:

This project will count as a test.

  1. All papers should be essay form, typed and double spaced, using correct grammar and spelling.
  2. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade.
  3. Students are required to hand in Bibliography.  Students who need help in creating a bibliography page should go to www.easybib.com
  4. Students should email all articles to home email address in order to print. This will avoid backup on the library’s printer. If students do not have home email you may print in the Library for this project.
  5. There will two Library visits: November 12th and 14th, in order to complete the search for articles.
