"In overthrowing me, you have cut only the trunk of the tree of liberty. It will spring again from the roots for they are numerous and deep."

-- Toussaint L'Ouverture, 1802

Slave revolt, massacre of owners & burning of the plantations

Toussaint L'ouverture

Introduction:

How many of you heard about the Haitian Revolution? I’m waiting….. Well that is because it is practically ignored!  Your job as historians is to correct this oversight. A colony populated predominantly by plantation slaves overthrew both its colonial status and its economic system. As a result of imperialism the people in Haiti had lost their basic rights. French planters owned large sugar plantations and nearly half a million enslaved Africans lived and worked in terrible conditions. In Haiti, the free people of color began the chain of rebellion when French planters would not grant them citizenship as decreed by the National Assembly of France in its "Declaration of the Rights of Man." A bloody, thirteen-year revolution ensued, a complex web of wars among and between slaves, whites, and free people of color, France, Spain and Britain that would eventually create the first independent black nation in the Western world. It also established a new political state of entirely free individuals—with some ex-slaves constituting the new political authority. How was this possible?  Why were the slaves in this colony able to gain their independence and other slaves in other colonies could not????

The Task:

You and your partner our expert historians.  You were hired by the historical society to prove to the authorities that this revolution is important to world history.  You must let them know that this part of history deserves more than a few paragraphs in the text book!!!  Your  web research is to find out the motivation that propelled the Haitian plantation workers  to revolt against the French and what the effects of this revolution were. You must also make a comparison with another revolution in order to make your case.

For this project you are using the 5-step Global History Public Policy Analyst approach in order to complete the following tasks:

1.       Identify the Problem by describing three factors that helped bring about the Haitian revolution.

2.       Gather the Evidence that would prove that a problem did indeed exist in colonial Haiti.

3.       Determine what the Factors helped to bring about the French Revolution.  This would include who were the key figures involved.

4.       Identify and explain at least one immediate effect and at least one long-term effect of this revolution.

5.       Do a comparative analysis to another such revolution.

6.       You are using these five steps in order to complete a thematic essay.

The Process:

1.       You will be completing the five step Global Public Policy Analyst with a partner.

You must be able to define public policy in order to understand the five steps of the public policy analyst.

2. Complete Worksheet 2: Gather the Evidence (MSWORD Version )in order to guide you in gathering evidence.

2.       In order to help guide you in identifying the causes complete

Worksheet3: "Determine the Causes"(MSWORD Version)

3.       In order to determine the long term and short term effects it is necessary to evaluate the policy, in this case that of the Haitian revolution itself, you must complete  Worksheet4: "Evaluate the Policy"(MSWORD Version)

4.        Using your notes and/or textbooks you must determine one particular revolution to compare this one to. Once you and your partner have determined that revolution then you can complete Worksheet5: "Comparative Analysis"(MSWORD Version)

 6. Hand in the worksheets for evaluation.

 7.  Using the information in the worksheet individually you must complete the following thematic essay

In August 1791, a massive slave uprising erupted in the French colony Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti. The rebellion was

ignited by a Vodou service organized by Boukman, a Vodou houngan (High Priest). Historians stamp this revolt as the most

celebrated event that launched the 13-year revolution which culminated in the independence of Haiti in 1804.
