WebQuests are a research methodology that allows students to use Internet tools for specific tasks in all the academic areas.  The TIPS program designed particular organization steps for Science, Social Studies and History but, it is not limited to any area of study.

Teachers are responsible of presenting a particular scenario where the students are the center.  In other words this is a student centered technique.

Now, go online to the TIPS site

http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/tips.html

Please look at the left side of the screen.  In this area you can choose the different areas of the site.  Notice there is a section for

 PPA Teachers

ConLaw Teachers

Each section applies to different disciplines. First lets take a look at the different steps for each one.

Identify which technique would address your particular course.

Now let’s begin our WebQuest!

  1. Choose a topic for your lesson.
  2. Open a Microsoft Words blank document.
  3. As you notice most of the WebQuests have a particular background.  If you would like a background go to Format  then click Background and choose Colors or Fill Effects or check both.
  4. As this point you have your background.
  5. Now you may use WordArt for your titles and subtitles.  Click on Insert then Picture and WordArt.  You can do the same thing by clicking directly on the Word Art Icon at the bottom of the screen.
  6. At this point you can choose the type of letters you want for your titles and subtitles.  Be aware that the subtitles are the different steps for the TIPS methodology.
  7. Now work on the different steps:

a) Identify the problem: Write a brief introduction.

b) Task: What are the students going to do?

c) Process: How are they going to do it?

d) Resources: In here you need to include different Internet sites that the students need to use for the particular research that you want them to do. If you want, you can just place the sites on your WebQuest or hyperlink them with a key word. You can use different search engines for this purpose:

www.yahoo.com                www.google.com                        www.lycos.com                                                                                          www.askjeeves.com     www.mamma.com

***How do you hyperlink?

Simply go to the site that you want and copy the http address.

Then, write a word that you want to hyperlink to. For example “TIPS.”

Highlight the word and click Insert

And then click Hyperlink this will take you to a box and just click Ctrl V on your keyboard and then OK.

e) Evaluation: For the evaluation you need a rubric so that the students know what is expected from them before they begin.  You can go to www.Rubistar.com  and create your particular rubric.

 f) Conclusion:  Explain what the students learned after completing the WebQuest and what would be the follow-up step activity in the class. Your Conclusion should include New York State Learning Standards. These can be found by going to the following site www.nysed.gov   Here you can obtain the New York Standards for different disciplines.
