Date: Feb. 6, 2004 Group Members: Co-Chairs: Sr. Donna Banfield, SBS & Ms. Pat FosterMs.    Lynette Spence, Ms. Carole Sayles, and Sr. Terri Williams

1.      In one or two sentences, state the nature of the social problem that your group plans to study.

Our students are very weak in their English-Language Arts.  Many of our students are coming in not adequately prepared for our academic program.

2.      List at least three undesirable social conditions that result from this problem:

a)  These students will never be able to adequately perform in the upper grades if this problem  isn’t        addressed now on all levels.

b)  These students will not have the opportunity to get into a good college program

c)  As adults the students will not be able to get a decent paying jobs.

3.      Write a short phrase that summarizes the social problem and its location (examples: students reading below grade level at P.S. 299; vandalism at Jones Middle School; cheating in Mr. Green’s math class)

Our basic concern is that the students must excel in this area to have a chance of bettering themselves and their future.
