Date: 12/03/04                         Group Members: Angela Goode, Chyrise Raysor, Liz Baez Rebecca Labbe, Joy Stewart Jonell Jackson Tiffany Perry Jerome Pannell Dawn Martin Samone Jackson, and DuJauan Lopez

Your problem (phrase):

Lack of parental involvement in a child’s educational success.

List the three public policy alternatives from Worksheet5. Create a short word or abbreviation to summarize each policy and write it at the end of each policy (see example).

Implement steps to get more parents involved – Reward –Based incentive program. Ex: food grab bags N.U.T. cards for students (Not in uniform today). If your parent attends then that child does not have to be in uniform, this pushes the child to push the parent. Get the vendors in the neighborhood to donate prizes to give away.

X-Marks the spot- Parent signature required – On all homework worksheet, quiz’s test papers will not be given a grade if it is not signed by a parent or guardian. Once it has been signed and reviewed then it will be accepted.

Revision of After school program. Develop a clear definition of implementing Parental involvement. Post signs made by the children and Art teacher to be posted on the parent bulletin board and in the classrooms. All the revised rules for the after school program. All that is expected by a parent in the after school program. Workshops will be given to support this new program. (Homework skills, study habits, Managing your child with homework and how to recognize that a child needs more help.)

Revision of after school program

Parental involvement: Medium feasibility high effectiveness after school Low feasibility Low effectiveness X marks the spot- High feasibility Medium effectiveness

Discuss the reasons for your decisions in the matrix.

Effectiveness- Implementing the Reward incentive program would be an effective policy. This program has gotten results in numerous schools in the surrounding areas and outside of NY.  It gets the neighborhood community involved by donating and coming out to talk to us as a school in their community. Rises our enrollment  because the school is exposed to the community and to people that might not of known there was a school near by.(catholic school)

Posting a clear definition for the after school program and seeing them everyday on the bulletin parent board. Posting workshops related to homework skills study skills, and tutoring. It is medium feasible that they will start to take an interest if its offered

X- Marks the spot is a medium effectiveness process. We are asking for the parent to sign all given assignments and to review them. Our concern is will the parent actually review it or will they just sign it because they have to. The signing of such assignments has worked out well in the upper grades.

Discuss why your group prefers one alternative over the other two alternatives.

We believe that the reward based incentive program would be the one we prefer. Only because it will get the parents to come to the school, Prizes will be given out, year tuition will be awarded, vendors, summer school spots will also be raffled off. In this manner we can have the parental workshops and start to get more parents involved .Therefore begin to reduce the problem of lack of parental involvement. It could be perhaps a bit expensive if we give away and give away and not get the results needed. If we do we will all be the richer for it especially our children.
