Your problem (phrase):

Lack of parental involvement in a child’s educational success.

State one of the major existing policies that attempts to deal with the social problem:

Pg. 23 of the Parent/student handbook states that Parents are asked to take an active role in their child’s education by: assisting their child in his/her academic and moral development by carefully reviewing class work, test results, progress reports, and report cards; supervising home study; and reinforcing school policies.

What are the advantages of this policy (consider effectiveness, costs, enforcement, and public acceptance):

Parents know of the Parent /Student Handbook. The handbook is given to each parent by signature they sign a tear off in the back of the handbook, as a contract of acknowledgement and that they will follow and abide by this policy. The handbook is clear in what we expect and is in an attractive bonded book. It accessible to all parents. Each parent receives a handbook at no additional fee to them.12% signed and returned the handbook contract of acknowledgement. Though the number is low we feel that it was a start. 12% 30 out of 231 students. The parents are made aware that these policies have consequences and will be enforced.

What are the disadvantages of this policy (consider the effectiveness, costs, enforcement, and public acceptance):

The disadvantages with this are that even though it is made very clear in our present policy our policy lacks enforcement. Ex. The signing of the handbook contract only 30/231 has seen it. Report cards are left and not picked. The cost of the making of this handbook of $1000.00. The constant phone contacts from the office to parents. Teacher’s time, letters sent home on top letters and notices already sent. The cost of rims of paper. Enforcing this policy by open house 35% show.  Handbook, report cards conference, separate grade conferences, monthly calendars, letters, notices, warnings. Public acceptance-12% We have the major policies put in the Church Bulletin, before each school year as we open for registration. The signing of the handbook is a sign of the parent accepting the policy publicly. It is hard to enforce it. Not knowing how to get the policy enforced effectively. could tuition play a role? We pay therefore it’s the school’s problem. We care more about their social growth and educational success.

Based on your evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages, should the current policy be totally replaced, strengthened, or improved? What advantages, if any, from the current policy should be retained? What disadvantages, if any, should be eliminated?

Based on our evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of our current policy should be strengthen. All of the current policy should be retained; it’s a matter of St. Joseph developing a way to enforce the policy effectively. How do we discipline parents?
