Middle schools are the most likely level of schools for verbal abuse to be evident, according to The Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Ed. Ies National Center For education Statistics (http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2004/crime03/16.asp?nav=4). Additionally, it was noted that the larger the school population the higher percentage of reported incidents. In our schools daily bulletin, our principal noted on repeated occasions incidents of bullying and inappropriate comments in the school yard. A teacher noticed that kids are screaming at each other in the hallways and causing disruptions to other classes in session. Students using inappropriate street language casually was overheard on numerous days throughout the week in various settings. For example “You mad pussy.” Or “ I can see her chocha.” A counselor noticed how students freely disregard teacher’s instructions and feel quite comfortable challenging their authority. Our assistant principal noticed the use of body language in our students when they ignore or disregard their instructions. We have noted that adults in our community also struggle with respect and language.
