Ask-A LEGAL Eagle Policy Issues (Draft Version)

Submitting Questions

What information will the questioner (user) submit?

We request the student’s name, school, teacher, email address, phone number, grade level, and subject. This will allow the experts to tailor their responses appropriately for a given grade level.

What kinds of questions can Ask-A LEGAL Eagle answer?

Ask-A LEGAL Eagle will answer questions which are related to constitutional law issues as well as informational questions concerning the court system, definitions, and where to locate resources. Ask-A LEGAL Eagle will not answer personal questions, questions not relevant to law-related education, and questions that are too vague, have been answered before, or are (in our opinion) "homework" questions.

What are the procedures for submitting a question?

People who wish to submit a question to Ask-A LEGAL Eagle will go to the web site and fill out a short form which asks for basic information (name, email, school, grade level, etc.). They will pass through pages which contain the disclaimer and gives examples of acceptable and unacceptable questions. They will type in their questions in the space provided. We will give examples so questioners will know how to frame their question while taking into consideration the language and length of their submission.

What will questioners receive in response to inappropriate questions?

Questioners will receive a short form memo that informs them of the reason why their question will not be forwarded and answered by our experts. They will be given the opportunity to resubmit their question following the established guidelines.

"Your question has not been posted for one or more of the following reasons:

Personal: Your question is a personal question that will not be answered by our experts.

Off Subject: Your question does not fall into one of the categories of constitutional

questions."

Responding to Questions

How long should it take for a question to be answered?

We would like to see questions answered between 3 and 7 days.

How will we distribute the questions to our experts?

We will allocate questions to experts based on a rotating method. For example, Expert A will receive the first question, Expert B the second, and so forth. There may be times when we assign a question to more than one expert at a time.

How many questions a week will experts be asked to answer?

At the outset, experts will be assigned only one question per week. But much of this is dependent on the number of questions per week and the number of experts we have. If experts are willing to take on a larger load we may increase the number of questions directed to them.

Will questions and responses be posted on the web and/or emailed to the questioner?

All answered questions will be posted on the web site so that others can read the question and the response(s).

How will experts be trained?

Training will be done on-line, through Project LEGAL’s web site and our listserv. Once approved, new Ask-A LEGAL Eagle experts will be added to our expert base.

How will new experts be recruited and trained?

We welcome individuals who wish to become Ask-A LEGAL Eagle experts. They can register by filling out a simple form on our web site or by contacting Project LEGAL via e-mail or phone. Training will consist of providing prospective experts with an overview of Ask-A LEGAL Eagle as well as information concerning how to answer questions.

Will we allow counter-responses and/or question/answer clarifications?

Yes, if a question is unclear we will contact the individual and try to rework the question. Responses will be checked to make sure they answer the posed question and are in readable format.
