Defining the theme in the generalization

The Regents exam for Global History and Geography contains a thematic essay question. It will probably begin with a generalization that contains one or more themes or concepts. The first part of the essay question may ask you to define the major theme(s) or concept(s) in the generalization.

Here are two samples:

A. Define the meaning of imperialism.
B. Define the meaning of political systems, economic systems, and human rights.
