About Ask-A-LEGAL Eagle Project LEGALs web site ( http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal) contains several resources for teachers and students, an upcoming one called Ask-A-LEGAL Eagle, (http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/welcome.html) is a virtual reference desk service which creates the opportunity for students to ask questions related to legal issues in their American history course (e.g., speech, press, due process, equal protection), and numerous legal experts will answer those questions on-line in an ongoing volunteer effort. What is Project LEGAL? Since Jim Carroll created Syracuse University's Project LEGAL in 1976, it has developed into a national program with schools in 33 states, including New York City elementary and secondary American history teachers and students since 1983. Our focus is to train teachers on how to use the case method to infuse landmark Supreme Court cases into their courses What is Digital Reference? Digital reference services, also called "Ask-An-Expert" (or "AskA") services, are Internet-based question and answer services that connect users with individuals who possess specialized subject or skill expertise. As opposed to static Web pages, digital reference services use the Internet to place people in contact with people who can answer questions and instruct users on developing certain skills. What can you do? How to get involved Subscribe to the LGLEAGLE listserv What is a listserv? A listserv is an on-line discussion group or chat group. When you join the group, or subscribe, you are on an email mailing list. When a subscriber sends an email message to the LGLEAGLE listserv, all experts who are subscribers to the list receive that email message. Therefore, everyone receives the same message, and everyone can respond to the same message - and all those messages that are sent in response are received by everyone on the list. Why would you use this? You could send a message to the LGLEAGLE listserv to discuss any training or policy questions. If you know someone else who would be interested in serving as an expert, refer them to the following Ask-A LEGAL Eagle page where they can register. Expectations of Volunteers Unlike traditional Lawyer in the Classroom programs that often necessitate giving up a half day of ones valuable time, Ask-A-LEGAL Eagle volunteers will simply log-on to our web site ( http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/welcome.html) while at the office or at home, and write their response to a curriculum-based legal question (instructions to students will discourage any personal questions and there will also be a disclaimer that the purpose is for educational use only, and that answers should not be viewed as legal advice for which one should seek the professional services of a lawyer).***************** Subscribing to the Ask-A-LEGAL Eagle listserv ********************** To subscribe to a LIST, use the following command.
